IRWIN

Origin: Founded by Col. John Irwin in 1864, it was carved out of North Huntingdon Township because of the construction of a Pennsylvania Railroad Station in the approximately 1 square mile area. Until the first half of the 20th century, Irwin was a focal point of commerce for its residents and those of the township and nearby North Irwin. A business district still exists downtown and along Route 30.

NORTH HUNTINGDON

Origin: North Huntingdon Township was founded in 1790 when the municipality of Huntingdon was subdivided into north and south townships. The municipality consists of approximately 28 square miles, with more than 190 miles of municipal roads and streets and many more of county and state roads. The landscape consists of rolling hills and valleys, originally sporting farms and woods. It now boasts many housing areas, industrial, commercial and professional buildings, golf courses, nature trails and parks. As development occurred, several large shopping areas, restaurants and many businesses have developed along Route 30, the central municipal corridor.
